Travel categories explained

We started with travel websites and instantly knew we had to break it down a little further.

So, we added travel blogs. This is where things get a little murky. What’s a travel blog?

There will probably be a feature article about defining what travel blog is in the near future. Today a travel blog is not what it once was, and in a few years it won’t be what it is today.

Today as far we are concerned a travel blog is about one’s travels in some shape or form. So for the purposes of rating travel related websites we’ve made a third category – travelogues. And to make it even better we’ve added tags. We’ll do something with tags a little later. But we’ve built a database up so we can do some exceptional sorting in the future.

In the meantime, this is what we’ve got for you on RevCrunch.

The main RevCrunch categories:

Travel Websites: Commercial travel websites that provide a paid service of one kind or another e.g. Lonely Planet, National Geographic, TripAdvisor

Travel Blogs: Travel websites that use a blogging system to produce most of their content.

Travelogues:  Websites whose majority of content is about someones journey.

Features: Feature articles by the editors or staff.

Can we break things down even further? Yes, easily. But we don’t plan to for a while. Or unless there’s a huge call to do so.

We are however looking at introducing a Travel photography category for travel websites that mainly focus on travel photos etc. But it will largely depend on what we find out there.

Category crossovers

It’s going to happen at some stage. Somebody will say they are travel blog and not a travelogue or maybe even a website and not a blog. The list goes on. At the end of the day we are leaving it up to our reviewers to decide. If they view a website and it comes across to them as a travel blog rather than a travelogue then that’s how it will be categorized.

At best, a website might get put into two categories. But as it stands we’re trying to avoid too much of a crossover.

We certainly feel this subject is up for discussion at some point and will publish a feature on it where everybody can have their say.
